build guide
how to turn a character (concept + mini-pet) into a working face-tracked stream filter, the same way Burnt Peanut does it. Snap Lens Studio → Snap Camera → OBS. ~30 min per lens, free, no Blender, no coding.
before you start: Snap Camera's official servers were shut down in 2023. We use a community patch by
Jaku that revives it. The patch is mature and safe (35k+ users); it's the same one Burnt Peanut tutorials use.
0. what you need
- Windows 10/11 (Mac works too, both apps are cross-platform)
- ~10 GB free disk space
- OBS installed (you already have it)
- A character from the roster picked + its 2 ref PNGs downloaded (concept + mini-pet)
1. install Snap Lens Studio
- Go to ar.snap.com/download
- Download "Lens Studio" for your OS
- Install with defaults. First launch will pull templates (~2 GB).
- Skip the welcome tour; close starter project.
2. install Snap Camera + Jaku patch
- Download Snap Camera 1.21.0 from uptodown
- Install. Do not open yet.
- Visit snapchatreverse.jaku.tv/snap
- Follow the on-page steps — it points you at a hosts-file edit + cert install. About 4 clicks.
- Now open Snap Camera. It should connect (top-right indicator goes green).
3. build the lens in Lens Studio
3a. start a Face Lens project
- Lens Studio → File → New Project → choose "Face Mask" template (or "Face Stretch" if not present)
- Delete the placeholder face mesh in the scene panel
- Save as the character slug, e.g.
caps.lsproj
3b. generate the 3D head from the concept
- Asset Browser (bottom-left) → click "+" → "Generate 3D" (AI badge)
- Upload the concept PNG (use the download button on the character's page)
- Pick "Object" not "Character". Generate. ~60s.
- Drag the result into the scene, parent it to Face Tracker → Head. It will snap to your forehead.
- Scale/position so the object is in front of your face (test in preview pane with your webcam)
3c. cut eye + mouth holes
Burnt Peanut style: your real eyes and mouth show THROUGH the 3D object.
- Select your 3D head asset → Inspector → Material
- Add a Face Mask Material → mask out two ellipses for eyes, one for mouth at the positions where the character's face features would be
- Lens Studio has a "Face Mask" preset — drag onto your object and tweak the mask texture in any image editor (the project includes a starter mask PNG you can edit)
Easier alt: in step 3a, when you generate, prompt with "with three circular cutout holes on the front face — two for eyes, one for mouth". The AI bakes the holes in. Less work, but less control.
3d. add the mini-pet companion
- Asset Browser → "+" → Generate 3D again, upload the mini-pet PNG
- Drag into scene, but DO NOT parent to Head — leave it as a sibling so it floats independently
- Position it in the corner of the frame (e.g. bottom-right of the preview)
- Optional: add an "Animation" component → simple bob loop (Y position oscillation, 0.5 Hz)
3e. preview + publish
- Preview pane (top-right) should show your face, the 3D character on your head, your eyes/mouth visible, the mini-pet floating nearby
- If the head is offset / wrong size: select your 3D asset → adjust Transform until it fits
- File → Save
- Publish → "Share Internally" → copy the lens URL (it'll be something like
https://lens.snap.com/...)
4. pipe it into OBS
- Open Snap Camera. Paste your lens URL in the top search bar.
- Click your lens to activate. You should see yourself with the character on.
- In OBS → Sources → Add → Video Capture Device → device: "Snap Camera"
- That source IS your facecam now. Use it wherever you'd use a regular cam.
- Optional: Snap Camera has a green-screen mode (toggle in app). In OBS, right-click the source → Filters → Chroma Key → key out green.
5. iterate per character
Once one lens works end-to-end, the rest are copy-paste:
- File → Save As → name with next character's slug
- Swap the 3D head asset for the next character's
- Swap the mini-pet asset
- Re-publish, paste the new URL into Snap Camera
Build all 10 at your pace. They're all in the roster, all have concept + pet refs ready.
troubleshooting
"Snap Camera won't connect"
The Jaku patch hasn't taken. Re-do step 2 — the hosts file edit is the usual miss.
"AI 3D from concept looks bad"
The PNG is too busy or too small. Use the largest version (the download link on the character page gives you the full 1024x1024). Crop tightly around the character before uploading.
"Eyes/mouth holes don't line up with mine"
In Lens Studio, the Face Mesh component has anchor points. Move them to match where your face features sit relative to the 3D head.
"OBS won't see Snap Camera"
Snap Camera installs a virtual cam. Restart OBS after Snap Camera is running. On Windows 11, you may need to allow camera access for OBS in Settings → Privacy → Camera.
